past five years, you might not recognize the place.
While increasing in sophistication, the city is
at no risk of relinquishing its casual attitude
and celebration of the outdoors. Progressive Portland
boasts a variety of intriguing districts
and neighborhoods and some of the largest and
most beautiful urban parks anywhere. It is an
excellent base from which to start or finish your

golf vacation experience.
Portland’s southwestern suburbs quickly dissolve into the vineyards of the Willamette Valley, one of our favorite wine regions in the U.S. We are extremely fond of the well-structured, earthy Burgundian-style Pinot Noir from Willamette appellations. As you sample fine Oregon Pinot, you will taste the striking diversity of this most delicate varietal, thanks largely to highly variant soil types that are found here.
Willamette Valley differs from California regions due to the large predominance of small-production, independent wineries. The spotlight is on the wine and the land rather than on celebrity winemakers and tourist wine trails. Education on the unique and diverse terroir of the region also is more pronounced and the partnerships among winemakers, chefs and farmers are unlike anything you will find elsewhere in the country.
As in other parts of the state, you can sample market-fresh cuisine that represents the very best of the Oregon bounty. Examples include salmon, Dungeness crab and other seafood; hazelnuts, winter pears, and chanterelles; cheeses from the famed Rogue Creamery; and grain-fed meats from the Painted Hills of Western Oregon. Cap it off with exceptional wine, spirits from any of Portland’s 10 small distilleries, or a pint or two from any of the area’s three dozen microbreweries.
For Portland-area golf, we will take you to the western suburbs where you can choose from Pumpkin Ridge’s Ghost Creek course and the two courses at The Reserve Vineyards and Golf Club. Ghost Creek, a CORK & TEE Destination, was designed by Bob Cupp, and has hosted numerous USGA and professional tour championships. This is a stern test of target golf, so we will counsel you on the appropriate set of tees from which to play.
At the Reserve property, you will find John Fought’s South Course, former home of the Jeld-Wen Tradition of the Champions Tour. Bring your sand wedge as this is a tree-lined, modern parkland-style design with heavy rough and a surplus of bunkers throughout—a good challenge for golfers of any level. The North Course, a heathland-style by Bob Cupp, is also superb. Whether you choose Pumpkin or the Reserve, you cannot lose.
In the Portland area, accommodations can include any number of properties ranging from recently-renovated historic hotels to more contemporary boutique properties. You may also be fortunate enough to base at a Tuscan-inspired inn situated in an idyllic hilltop vineyard.
